Karin’s Story

Karin Hollands flipped a coin between psychology and IT, and IT “won” because it included multimedia in the course title. While starting out as a Software Developer, Karin loves leading and managing people, and leads Comunet’s Software Team who solve problems for their clients.

My Tech Path

Back in Year 12 I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I liked computer games and art, hated maths, but quite liked physics and was reasonably sure I wanted a decent job so I could do fun things in life. I ended up flipping a coin between Psychology and an IT degree that had “multimedia” in the title. Thankfully I ended up taking the IT path!

After finishing uni, I started on a pretty classic developer path. I joined my company as a Software Developer and then worked my way through to Senior. From there it became reasonably clear that I could talk to people, so I started to do more Project Manager, and Business Analyst work.

Currently, I am Head of Software at the same company leading a merry band of developers, business analysts, data, and modern workplace specialists all writing software for clients so they can save peoples’ lives, help medical science, aid native animal conservation efforts, and keep helping those in need!

The best advice I’ve received

This too will pass.

Many people have said similar things over the years, but the most recent credit goes to a brilliant team member.

What would you tell your 15 year old self?

It’s really not as hard as it looks! Plus you’ll have so much fun with the people you work with.
