“Ikigai” is the Japanese concept referring to something that gives a person a sense of direction or purpose in life, in turn providing fulfillment and sense of satisfaction. Ikigai is cited by the World Economic Forum as one of the contributing factors to those living in the Blue Zone of Okinawa for their long and healthy lives.

The National STEM School Education Strategy 2016–2026 focuses on enhancing foundational skills, fostering industry partnerships, and promoting STEM careers through collaboration. HerTechPath includes the Tech Council of Australia’s research reports to help girls and women understand the industry’s current landscape and future needs, empowering them to seize opportunities in this rapidly growing sector.

EdTechSA is a professional association providing support to educators and leaders in ICT and digital technologies. They run professional learning sessions and an annual conference. If you sign up as a member you can attend these sessions at a reduced rate.

The Ikigai canvas is an excellent tool for exploring and defining personal purpose, or “ikigai,” meaning ‘a reason for being.’ HerTechPath uses this resource in some of our training sessions for girls and women, helping them discover their passions, strengths, and goals, guiding them towards meaningful careers in STEM. Imagine Cup Junior is a program developed by Microsoft Education. Although not specifically aimed at girls, this program helps teachers introduce artificial intelligence by providing resources including powerpoints, videos, and teacher instructions explaining key concepts and how it has been applied to solve real world issues. Students can enter a competition where they can win prizes and also receive feedback about their idea from industry professionals. The focus of this competition is to help students realise that AI can be used to improve the world. It is a design thinking challenge.

The STEM Girls Academy by UniSA is a valuable resource that offers curriculum-linked experiences to promote gender equity in STEM. With hands-on activities and mentoring, it inspires girls to pursue STEM careers. HerTechPath highlights this resource for its engaging approach and includes the program’s quiz, helping participants explore STEM pathways that align with their skills and interests. Years 11 and 12 students can apply for a Creative Challenge to learn how to apply design thinking methodology to their Research Project (SACE).

The UNSW STEM Careers resource is an excellent tool for exploring diverse STEM career pathways, featuring a helpful quiz to match users with potential careers. HerTechPath uses it to inspire girls and women by showcasing real-world opportunities and guiding them to roles that align with their strengths, supporting our mission to encourage females into fulfilling STEM careers
